Sadly, we haven’t picked up the Aussie accent…But we have started to pick up  some words, phrases, pronunciations, and spellings from our time here so far. The list below is ever expanding. Let us know in the comments what we might be missing!

  • Arvo = Afternoon
  • Avo = Avocado
  • Bogan = Low class or “white trash”
  • Brekky = Breakfast
  • How ya goin’? = How are you?
  • Full Stop = Period (.)
  • Up the duff = Pregnant
  • Singlet = Wife Beater/Tank-top
  • Diary = Calendar
  • Make a booking = Make a reservation
  • Thongs = Flip-flops
  • Pint = draft beer
  • Pub = bar
  • Reckon = think
  • Fancy dress = formal wear
  • Do you fancy = do you want/like
  • Keen = interested
  • Capsicum = pepper
  • Rocket = arugula (salad)
  • Flat white/Long black
  • Sparkie = electrician
  • Mozzie = mosquito
  • Cheers = thank you
  • Winge = complain
  • Nackered = tired
  • Mobile = cell phone
  • Heaps = tons
  • Petrol = gas
  • Devo = devastated
  • A real cracker = a funny joke

Pronunciations:

  • Fillet: “Fill-ett”
  • Pasta: “Pass-tuh”

Spellings:

  • “ise” in place of “ize”:
