UPDATE – we came back last night before going to see The Avengers…it was McKay’s first time and he was very impressed by the soup dumplings. As per the first time…the wait was about an hour, but they give you a beeper to let you know when your table is ready and there is an area to sit and have a bottle of wine while you wait.
Bonus points for the staff at Din Tai Fung. I left my credit card at the table and one of the waiter chased us all the way down into the World Square mall area to give it back to me! So nice…
Bottom Line: Fun dining experience, yummy yummy dumplings. BYO!
I kept hearing about this place so I finally made it over with a friend for dinner. Approaching Din Tai Fung is a little intimidating. We got there a little before 7:30 and the outdoor “waiting area” was crowded with people waiting for a table. They actually have an outdoor seating area JUST for people waiting for a table. Craziness.Anyways, we approached the hostess area and asked for a table for two. She handed us the paper menu and a beeper and told us it would be 20-30 minutes. It’s a very efficient system because over the course of 20 minutes, you can read through the menu, circle the things you want and specify how many, chat a bit, and then BAM – your beeper goes off and you’re seated. There were a couple old pros around us that had brought a bottle of wine (you can also order one there) and were drinking while they waited. When you are seated. Do not be alarmed. The little cloth basket covered with a napkin next to everyone’s chair is not filled with puppies or babies or whatever else you can think of. It’s where you are supposed to store your purse/other belongings. Strange, but we went with it.Another tip – the menu doesn’t have any prices. Which can be a bit daunting, but at the end of the meal it ended up being really cheap – $48 for two people (we didn’t get any alcoholic drinks mind you, but it’s BYO anyways). Here’s what we had – I recommend everything:
- Shrimp & Pork Shao Mai Dumplings (4 peices)
- Xiao Long Bao – Crab & Pork Dumplings (8 Pieces)
- Pork Buns (3 Pieces)
- Dan Dan Noodles (1 Orders)
- Pot of tea (for two)
- Fried Taro Bread (1 order comes with 4 pieces)
